After reading a bunch of the posts here under "Bug Reports", I figured I would share with you the reason you are experiencing what you are.

The developers apparently know why as well...

If an update is running while playing a game, it will freeze or become choppy or not register your movements.

I asked if there was a way to pause updates when a game is being played or give us the option to turn off auto updating - They "claim" there is nothing they can do. Their only suggestion was to turn off Wi-Fi or unplug your router.

They said to come here and "request" a fix and if enough of you up-vote it, they will think about fixing it and improving the experience for all of us.
