Summer collection not collecting

I have been playing the bowling game with my kids and we have been trying to get all the summer pins. We are a high level on the game so unlocking items are few and far in between. After playing about 4 games with 10 lanes we finally unlocked an item and it WAS NOT a summer collection item, rather a regular item that we could get at any time.

Last time the bowling game had an event (spring event) it had its own point system with its own collectible timeline. This system was much better than the summer one. There is no way we will be able to unlock everything with the allotted time.
